Our relationship goes back more than thirty years. By 1979 we had already played together in several popular groups. Our band prior to The Movies was Tader and The Heart Beatz. It was unique and very successful but broke up in the fall of 1981. Not long afterwards Ray Strube, Bob Barr and I got together to record some of my original tunes at Electric Possum Land. After a few months of productive recording we had half an album done and had created a fresh sound. A 45 "Photograph" was ready to press but we also felt we needed to get out and play as a group. The Movies trio was born.

The group was soon playing several nights a week and was very popular at the MD-DE beaches. Things were going great but our recorded sound was based on a quartet or quintet with three or more vocals. To sound like our record live we needed another member. Former band mate Rick Beck joined to play guitar, keyboards and sing. Rick is a great natural player and singer and he really rounded out the line up. This Movies combo could do a more accurate rendition of our original tunes live and with his addition it also expanded our possibilities with stylized cover tunes. However, in 1983 Rick left the band and we would soon afterwards try something quite different. Years later Rick would rejoin the group to play bass and sing.

With Rick's departure we decided to go in a little different direction, adding two keyboard players, a sax and a trumpet to the mix. Ray Strube wasn't interested in that group direction and departed the band. His old friend Kendall "Sparky" Dixon was hired to play drums. Along with Kendall, Bob Barr and I, the rest of the new line up would include Pedro Miller (piano, guitar & vocals), Mike Halverson (organ & vocals), Grady Griggs (tenor sax & vocals) and Nathaniel Boozer (trumpet). Mike Robertson would be the sound man. After a couple months of rehearsal the group really started to have a sound all it's own. There was great potential within the group but our arrangements required a lot of restraint to keep things from getting too cluttered. With all it's power I felt this version lost a bit of it's raw edge, something which had been a hallmark of the previous "Movies" bands. Never the less, it turned into a fine group and we did several very memorable gigs, including a show at the Wax Museum in D.C. Within a year personal differences in regards to the band's musical direction would split it apart. From that split another Movies trio and a new group called The Cutters would emerge.

Since Bob Barr stayed with the rest of the large Movies band, Ray Strube and I recruited ex Heart Beatz bassist Steve Schellinger. He would play bass and provide strong vocals for this Movies trio. It was a good group but I was still interested in having a bigger sound. I had worked with synthesizers since they first became commercially available and used them regularly in 70's bands and on studio projects. I started to experiment with the possibility of adding additional keyboard parts (such as organ, piano & strings) to the band's live sound by means of a new technology called midi sequencing. It was a means of playing back previously created parts into once or more synthesizers. This eventually led to a whole new band project called Fun with Joan.

A while after "Fun with Joan" broke up I played organ and guitar with Bob's project "The Cutters". I also did arranging for the band. Starting out as an off shoot of the big "Movies" band 'The Cutters" went through several member changes before I joined around 1987. It was very successful and traveled a lot. As groups will do, in 1989 "The Cutters" disbanded. It would be reformed using members of a Frederick, Md group and continue on. Local band members Ray Strube Wayne Lopez, Joey Fulkerson and I decided to reform as "The Movies". Danny Woolford , who had previously played in "The Comets", joined to play bass. This "Movies" song list would also include some more country rock tunes in the mix, along with much of the same music we had done in both "The Movies" and "The Cutters". Our old "Heart Beatz" front man Tader mixed the sound for us. The group sounded great and was well accepted but it didn't last. We all got along fine but by the end of 1989 both Joey and Wayne had decided they wanted to do something different. It ended in early 1990. The next band formed would be "The Circles". That group would include Tader, Rick Beck, Ray Strube, myself and later Cliff Hillis. It also sounded fine and was very creative but again short lived. A very frustrating era.

After the 1990 "Circles" split up I worked for several months with a fun trio called "Crabmeat, Pedro & Junior". Around 1991 Bob Barr and I reformed "The Cutters" band again and later started doing some "Movies" trios jobs as well on off days. "The Fantastic Cutters" was a fine band but by 1993 it was coming to an end and in 1994 Bob joined "Kathy Martin & the Hot Rods". After Bob left Ray Strube and I formed another "Movies" trio with former "Movies" and "Heart Beatz" member Rick Beck. This time Rick would once again be the bassist. (as he had for the 1980 Tader & the Heart Beatz trio) A while later we added Julie Lawrence as female vocalist and keyboardist. After Julie left we added another former "Gene Cook band" and "Cutters" member Chuck Sapp to play keyboards and sax. This group sounded good and got along great but both Strube and I were rather burnt out by that time. after three years we gave it a break and I started my solo act.

Miss Julie Lawrence sang and played keyboards for the band prior to Chuck Sapp.

By the 2006 Bob was still with "Night Life Band", Strube was with "Blues Deville", Rick was taking a break from playing out and I was doing my solo act. After talking about the possibility of reforming the band for a couple of years, in the fall of 2006 Bob Barr, Ray Strube and I got back together as the original trio reunion. Our first actual performance was Halloween weekend at Wild Quail Country Club in Wyoming, DE and our first public gig was a reunion held at the LHR in Lewes, DE on November 26. The response was terrific and, though Bob and Strube were still involved in other bands, we still managed to play once or twice monthly though the spring.
